Four Foods To Help With A Toothache

Dentist Blog

If you've ever suffered through a toothache, you know it's enough to ruin your day in a hurry. You're probably wanting to schedule a dentist appointment as soon as you can, but what about while you're waiting? Fortunately, there are some foods you can eat to help with a toothache.

Onions Everyone knows that an onion might make you cry, but it's also one of the best foods to relieve a toothache. The natural juices in the vegetable have antimicrobial abilities that help fight what's causing the pain. If the thought of biting a chunk out of an onion like it's an apple is a little unappealing, don't worry! Fortunately, you can simply cut a piece of onion and place it on your tooth or squeeze some of the onion juice into a bowl and drip it on the tooth.

Cloves or clove oil Along with onions, cloves are the next best option for toothache relief. And just like onions, cloves have antimicrobial properties that neutralize tooth pain. In fact, cloves are so well known for fighting dental pain that you'll find clove oil in many dental offices. If you have clove oil, place a few drops in a small container and add about 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil. Soak a cotton ball or paper towel in the mixture and hold it on your tooth for about 30 seconds. Be sure to rinse with water after.

Vanilla extract On the surface, this one might not make sense. Vanilla extract tastes sweet, so wouldn't it contain harmful sugar? Vanilla extract actually doesn't have much sugar, but it is high in Eugenol, which is an essential oil with antiseptic properties. Rub the extract directly on your tooth, or use a cotton ball soaked in extract.

Lime juice The acid in citrus fruits can be damaging to your teeth over an extended time period, but it can also kill the bacteria that's causing a toothache. Of the citrus family, lime juice works best for tooth pain relief. Just squeeze juice out of the lime and swish it around in your mouth, making sure to rinse with water when you're done. If you have an ulcer or any other open wound in your mouth, you should probably avoid this method, as the acid can agitate that wound.

Of course, any of these remedies should be seen as temporary relief. If you're experiencing tooth pain, it's a signal that something needs to be addressed. Even if the pain subsides for a few days, you should schedule a visit with a dentist (such as A Q Denture Services) to find the root cause of the problem.
