2 Tips To Help Your Teen Prevent A Dental Infection The First Day After A Root Canal

Dentist Blog

Getting a root canal is a sign that your dental pulp is infected. This often occurs in teens and younger children because of poor oral care habits. The root canal cleans out and removes the infection in order to restore the health of the tooth. Once the procedure is complete, it is important to immediately work to prevent another infection. As a teenager, this can be difficult and overwhelming to do immediately after surgery. Fortunately, you can help your teen successfully prevent infection the first day after their root canal.

Make Them an Antibacterial Tea that They can Drink Throughout the Day

An Antibacterial tea is an effective and easy way to keep bacteria at bay while still enjoying a healthy and delicious drink. You can make a tasty antibacterial tea for your teen to enjoy by using peppermint, oranges, and lemons. Both lemons and peppermint contain antibacterial properties that will clean your teen's dental area. Start by steeping fresh peppermint leaves in hot water. Add orange and lemon slices to the hot water and allow it to sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning, reheat the tea and strain out the herb and fruits. Add a few drops of honey and give it to your teen to drink. Make the tea for them after every meal in order to keep their teeth and cleanse and as bacteria free as possible.

Instruct them to Stick to Soft Foods First

Your teen needs to stick to soft foods the first few days after the root canal. This is done to ensure that the tooth heals and that it is not infected again. Hard foods can get stuck near the tooth and are more difficult to remove. You can convert some of their favorite foods into smoothies to make them tasty. For example, if your teen is a fan of peanut butter, then a peanut butter strawberry and banana smoothie would be ideal. You can add in vegetables and other fruits to ensure that they get all of their nutrients and calories. The smoothies should be consumed like they would meal. That means drinking one three times a day.

Root canals are not the most exciting dental procedures to undergo. In order to avoid another root canal, it is important to keep the tooth clean immediately after the procedure. Use these tips to make sure that your teen is able to accomplish this and talk to their dentist at a place like Renovo Endodontic Studio for more tips.
